Japan in Summer

Gion Matsuri is known for its vibrant processions, historic floats, and deep cultural significance. The festival dates back to the 9th century and was originally held to appease the gods during a plague. Today, it’s a lively celebration that spans the entire month, with the highlight being the grand parade of elaborately decorated floats (yamaboko) on July 17th.

Tanabata Matsuri, also known as the Star Festival, is a colorful and enchanting celebration held annually in Japan, typically on July 7th. The festival is based on a Chinese legend about two star-crossed lovers, Orihime (the Weaver Star) and Hikoboshi (the Cowherd Star), who are separated by the Milky Way and can only meet once a year. During Tanabata, people write their wishes, dreams, or hopes on small pieces of paper (tanzaku) and hang them on bamboo branches, hoping their wishes will come true.

Held annually in Tokyo, Sumidagawa takes place in late July. The festival lights up the night sky with thousands of colorful fireworks launched over the Sumida River, offering breathtaking views for spectators along the riverbanks. People gather in large numbers, many wearing yukata (summer kimono), enjoying the festive atmosphere, food stalls, and the dazzling fireworks display.

Firefly watching in Japan is a magical experience, especially during the summer months of June and July when fireflies (hotaru) light up the night. Many regions across Japan host firefly viewing events, where you can see these tiny, glowing insects dance along riversides, in forests, or near traditional gardens.

Climbing Mount Fuji to watch the sunrise is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that offers breathtaking views and a sense of accomplishment. The best time to do this is during the official climbing season in July and August, when the mountain huts are open and the weather is more favorable.
